Baku hosts international scientific conference on 87-th anniversary of outstanding ophthalmologist - UPDATE - PHOTOS

International scientific conference on the 87th anniversary of Academician Zarifa Aliyeva opened in the National Zarifa Aliyeva Ophthalmology Center on April 28.

The forum involves 50 experts from 10 countries worldwide. The conference participants honored Zarifa’s Aliyeva memory with a minute’s of silence.  A video about the scientific work of outstanding scientist was shown to the participants.

In his opening remarks, Azerbaijani Health Minister Oqtay Shiraliyev said academician Zarifa Aliyeva is one of the famous scientists and personalities of Azerbaijan of the twentieth century. As a scientist, Aliyeva has made exceptional achievements in development of ophthalmic science in Azerbaijan.

The minister informed the conference participants that Honoured Scientist of the Azerbaijan Republic, doctor of medical sciences and academician at the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Zarifa Aliyeva was born in Shahtakhti village of Sharur region on April 28, 1923.

After graduating from high school in 1942, she enrolled in medical-prophylactic faculty of Azerbaijan State Medical University.

Upon completing ophthalmology courses, she enrolled in graduate school in the Moscow Central Postgraduate Medical Institute in 1950. Thanks to the successful researches, the scientist has made a significant contribution to the science of ophthalmology and has held various high-rank positions.

Director of the National Zarifa Aliyeva Ophthalmology Center Elmar Gasimov, Chairman of the Society of Ophthalmologists of Turkey Sunay Duman, academicians at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Alevtina Brovkina, Larissa Moshetova and others spoke about rich scientific heritage of Zarifa Aliyeva who devoted her entire life to development of ophthalmology, researches, and about her achievements and fundamental works.

They noted, that Zarifa Aliyeva is an author of many studies on prevention and treatment of trachoma, prevalent in Azerbaijan in its time as well as works on contemporary problems of ophthalmology, including 12 monographs, textbooks and teaching aids, about 150 scientific publications. A prominent scientist has great merits in preparation of highly qualified personnel in the field of health.

Zarifa Aliyeva was a member of the Presidium of the All-Union Society of Ophthalmologists, Soviet Peace Committee, the Board of Azerbaijan Ophthalmologic Society and the All-Union editorial board of the journal "Journal of Ophthalmology.”

For her outstanding scientific achievements, Aliyeva was awarded by the Academy of Medical Sciences named after Averbuch.

The event also featured a presentation of the book devoted to Aliyeva.

The conference will last till April 30.

Today, the international scientific conference dedicated to the 87-th anniversary of outstanding scientist-ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva has been held at the National Center of Ophthalmology.

Specialists from Russia, Turkey, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Italy, Ukraine and Israel attended the conference.

Azerbaijani Minister of Health Oktay Shiraliyev, director of the national ophthalmology center named after academician Z. Aliyeva Elmar Gasimov, Chairman of Turkish Ophthalmologic Society Suna Duman, academician of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Alevtina Brovkina and others shared their memories about Zarifa Aliyeva at the opening of the conference.
