Human trafficking is import problem for Azerbaijan

04 May 2010 [18:07] - TODAY.AZ
Criminal acts related to human trafficking is an import problem for Azerbaijan, deputy of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan Rafael Jabbarov said.

"Trafficking in human beings or human trafficking is a new problem for Azerbaijan," Jabbarov said during debates on "Domestic violence is a major cause of human trafficking" held in the Media Centre of Azerbaijan.

"Unfortunately, problems taking negative character globally also affect our country. Trafficking is no exception in this case."

In past, crimes related to trafficking in people did not occur in Azerbaijan, he added.

A total of 71 cases of trafficking were reviewed and 65 people were brought to justice in Azerbaijan in 2009, the deputy said.

The victims of such crimes are mostly from problematic families, the MP noted.

According to him, although this problem has much larger scale in other countries, "I can not deny the threat of increased criminal activity in Azerbaijan".

According to the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry, 95% of human trafficking victims are women.
