A ceremony of laying flowers to the mass grave of soldiers-liberators died during the Great Patriotic War in 1941-1945 was held in Baku on Friday. Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, as well as representatives of diplomatic missions of the CIS countries and NGOs attended the event.
Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan Vladimir Dorokhin spoke on behalf of the heads of diplomatic missions of the CIS countries. He congratulated the veterans with the anniversary of the Great Victory.
"As friends of Azerbaijan, and partners in the Commonwealth we are sincerely glad how Azerbaijan celebrates this great holiday," Dorokhin said.
Ambassador stressed attention of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his concern for veterans of WWII, living in Azerbaijan, as well as thanked for the information policy pursued by the country to bring the truth about the Great Patriotic War to the current generation.
Ambassador said that the
victory of the Soviet Union in WWII would have been impossible without significant contribution of Azerbaijani oil.
MP Nikolai Zabelin and Narimanov district executive power head attended the ceremony. During the event, about 150 veterans were awarded with commemorative medals.
Speaking at the ceremony MP Zabelin noted that Azerbaijani soldiers honor veterans of WWII. He expressed gratitude to the Government and President Ilham Aliyev this holiday is not forgotten in Azerbaijan as opposed to some other CIS countries.
Today, Azerbaijan is at war. Separatists want to occupy its territory, as the Nazis wanted to occupy the territory of the Soviet Union, Zabelin said.
"I hope that their efforts will be futile and the Azerbaijani people will do everything to return the occupied lands," he added.
