UN marked the contribution of Azerbaijan to the victory in WWII

The 65th anniversary of the Victory in the Second World War has been marked by the United Nations Organization in New York. In the frame of the actions, in the United Nations headquarters also were demonstrated films on war and organized a photo-exhibition “We, together have won”. A concert of the performers from Azerbaijan and other CIS countries took place.

On May 6, the special session of UN General Assembly was addressed also by the permanent representative of the Azerbaijan Republic at the United Nations, Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev, who told that Azerbaijan has made huge contribution to the Victory over fascism and hundred thousands of Azerbaijanis were battling on the fronts.

A. Mehdiyev underlined that Baku, being the world center of oil production at that time, in days of war has provided about 70 percent of required petrol for the Soviet Army. In 1941-1945s more than 500 thousand wounded men were treated in medical institutions of Azerbaijan. And a lot of Azerbaijanis have been awarded the highest state awards for the shown heroism and courage, he stressed.

Underlining the important role of the United Nations in preservation of international peace and security, protection of the rights and fundamental freedoms of the person, A. Mehdiyev noted necessity of strengthening of its efficiency.

In the formal reception organized on this day on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Second World War, have taken part the Secretary General of the United Nations, heads of other international organizations, permanent representatives of member states of the United Nations, employees of public organizations, veterans of war, representatives of mass-media.
