Azerbaijani parliament discusses bill to fight domestic violence

The draft law on "Combating domestic violence and protecting of victims of domestic violence" is discussed in the first reading in the Azerbaijani Parliament.
"This law combats negative legal, medical and social consequences that have arisen as a result of domestic violence committed by close relatives or people living or ever lived together. It provides for social protection and legal support for victims of domestic violence, as well as defines and regulates the activities to solve the causes of domestic violence in accordance with international standards", chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, Rabiyyat Aslanova, said.

She said that the law will apply to family members, close relatives (husband, wife, parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, sisters, brothers, adopted people and adoptive parents), as well as other relatives, in case of their living together.

"The law will be relevant to the husband and wife, divorced and living together or separately, physical entities designated by the trustees and guardians, and those taken to custody and guardianship, men and women living in informal marriages, and families living with people living in informal marriage", chairman of the committee said.
