As the time goes by: A 78-yr old Azerbaijani digs up his own grave in advance

12 June 2010 [12:45] - TODAY.AZ
We often hear about a new fashion in Azerbaijan, especially in the capital, where wealthy people buy a place in the cemetery in advance.
They say that by doing so, they solve the problems that their children may face in the future – their children and loved ones can be caught in a quandary, looking for a place for the grave for their deceased parents.

Allan Omar oglu Ahmadov, a 78-yr resident of Gaymagly village in Azerbaijan’s western Gazakh region, has bought for himself not only a place on the cemetery, but even had a tombstone built there, with his picture and date of birth and date of death shown like 201.. on it.

Ahmadov was born in Gaymagly village of Gazakh in 1932. The life story of an old man is quite interesting. Ahmadov served in the Soviet Army for 29 years and retired in 1982. Until 1995 he worked in the KGB (now Ministry of National Security.) Currently, Ahmadov lives in a military town, gets a good pension, and despite his age, has no health complaints.

He says the reason that he had already bought a place in the cemetery and even ordered his  tombstone is his loneliness. Left all alone, he sometimes writes poems. Two years ago, he dug his grave in the cemetery of his native village and had his tombstone built of black marble on top of the grave.

Back in 1957, on a Day of Victory, he married his cousin Javahir with whom he lived 51 years but they never had children.

"At the end of 2008, after long hesitation I decided to order my tombstone. One morning, when I had my tombstone already finished, my wife had brain hemorrhage, and she passed away a week later. I had to order another tombstone.”

“In December of that year, two gravestones were installed at the cemetery in the Gaymagly village. One stands over the grave, the other is still waiting for its owner. I do not have children and if suddenly something happens with me, no one will make the tombstone. I have lost all my friends, and all I have left is my brother and sister, both of whom are old. So, to be on the safe side, I decided to make a tombstone in advance. Now I'm calm,” Ahmadov said.

"In my dream I was told that I will live 86 years, that is, till year 2018," the old man said.
