NGO: Education rights of Azerbaijanis living in Georgia are restricted

According to him, currently appointment of directors of Georgian origin to the schools located in Azerbaijani-populated regions, further complicates the situation. Azeris can not receive education in their native language.

According Ramazanli the amendments and additions to the Law on Education of Georgia says that education in the country can only be given in Georgian or Abkhaz languages. According to this law the right of Azerbaijanis in Georgia to get education in their native language is limited.

"In 1989, there were 183 Azerbaijani schools, 6,992 Azerbaijani teachers and 49,805 Azerbaijani schoolchildren in Georgia. In 1999, these figures hit 167 schools, 4,481 teachers, 35,908 schoolchildren respectively. Last year, there was 124 Azerbaijani schools 3,777 teachers and 29,184 Azerbaijani schoolchildren in Georgia," Ramazanli said.
