Ombudsman appeals to Azerbaijani parliament on adopting act of amnesty

Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova has appealed to Azerbaijani parliament in connection with the adoption of the decision on amnesty, press service of the ombudsman’s office told APA.
The appeal says that the anniversary of a number of important historical events of national and international importance will be marked this year.

The 85th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev, 15th anniversary of National Day of Salvation and 90th anniversary of Azerbaijan People’s Republic and the formation of the first parliament are among them.

Besides, Azerbaijan State Program on Human Rights was adopted 10 years ago – on June 18, 1998.

The 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the 55th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights will be marked this year.

Taking all this into account ombudsman offered to adopt amnesty act on the occasion of Heydar Aliyev’s 85th anniversary.

The appeal notes that the next presidential elections will be held in the country.

"By adopting the amnesty act, Azerbaijan will demonstrate the whole world that it is a democratic, legal state and is committed to  democratic values and principles of humanism," the appeal says.
