An amateur British gardener has grown what he claims is the world's largest potato. Peter Glazebrook, of Northampton, submitted the 3.8kg vegetable at this year's National Gardening Show in Shepton Mallet, Somerset last Friday. Glazebrook said: "I've been trying to grow these large for about ten years and this is the largest I've managed.
"It needs a long growing season to get as large as possible. The variety is important, this is Kondor. It was a commercial variety once upon a time."
He added: "It certainly grows large if you give it the right nourishment."
Glazebrook believes his potato is 255g heavier than the previous record of 3.5kg, but he is awaiting verification from Guinness World Records, BBC News reports.
A Lebanese farmer claimed to have dug up an 11.3kg potato in 2008, but it is not clear if this vegetable ever officially entered the record books.
