16 October 2023 [15:07] - TODAY.AZ

The Jewish community of Azerbaijan showed their solidarity and support for the victims of the recent massacre in Israel by gathering at the Mountain Jewish Synagogue in Baku, Azernews reports.

Hundreds of representatives of the Jewish community and people of Azerbaijan came together to express their condolences and support for the tragic Hamas terrorist attack that killed more than 1,300 innocent civilians in Israel.

Israeli Ambassador George Deek spoke at the ceremony, saying: “It may be a long and difficult road. But one thing is certain, one thing is undeniable and inevitable: We will win.” A prayer ceremony was held to commemorate the 1,300 Israelis who tragically lost their lives, and candles were lit in their memory.

The Jewish community of Azerbaijan has a long and rich history, with the first Jewish settlement in the area dating back to the 7th century. Today, Jews in Azerbaijan mainly consist of three distinct groups: Mountain Jews, the most sizable and most ancient group; Ashkenazi Jews, who settled in the area during the late 19th-early 20th century, and during World War II; and Georgian Jews who settled mainly in Baku during the early part of the 20th century.

The Jewish population in Azerbaijan is estimated to be around 6,400 people, with the majority of them being Mountain Jews. The only town in the world where Mountain Jews constitute the majority is Q?rm?z? Q?s?b?, which is also the only fully Jewish town outside of Israel.

The Jewish community of Azerbaijan has shown their commitment to standing in solidarity with the victims of the recent massacre in Israel and their commitment to peace and justice.
