Earthquake in western region arouse serious anxiety

The earthquake occurred in Western region was mostly felt in Shamkir. Zayam village residents told the APA Western bureau they got excited just after the tremors and did not enter their houses for a long time.

The chief of Shamkir Executive Power's civil defense headquarters Elchin Verdiyev told the APA Western bureau that he refutes information on the explosion sound before the tremors as the village residents say.

"We got into contact with Zayam village just after the earthquake as it is one of the biggest areas in the region and we were not reported on the explosion before the earthquake. Then we contacted with Shamkir hydroelectric power plant which is the main strategic object in the region. There was not any problem there and the plant goes on working. We delivered information to Emergencies Ganja regional department and they informed Emergences Ministry at once," he said.

Verdiyev said information on the explosion before the earthquake was groundless and said he did not know who welded this information.

We should note that earthquake occurred in Ganja region of Azerbaijan and surrounding regions at 15.36, Arif Hasanov, director of Republic Seismological Centre of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) told the APA.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the 14 kilometers in the north-west of Ganja. The magnitude of the earthquake shocks was 3 in the epicenter. The shocks were felt in Ganja and Shamkir at the magnitude of 2,5 and in Gadabay and Dashkasan at the magnitude of 2.

Hasanov said that these tremors are connected with the geotectonic processes. No casualties and damages were reported, APA Western bureau reports.
