Azerbaijani lawyer elected member of UN Advisory Board

Azerbaijani representative, professor Latif Huseyov was elected a member of the Advisory Board of the UN Council for a term of three years in a result of a voting held at a session of the UN Council for Human Rights on March 26.

The due information was provided by a source from the permanent representation of Azerbaijan under the UN department in Geneva.

30 out of 47 Council member-states voted for L.Huseynov during a secret voting, while his opponents from Russia, Poland and Croatia gained 42, 14 and 7 votes, respectively.

Thus, the representative of Azerbaijan added to the list of the first 18 members of the Advisory Board of the UN Council of Human Rights, which is intended to replace the previous UN subcommittee of human rights.

This body will play a role of the main "brain center" under the UN Council of Human Rights, aiming to present conclusions in the result of an expert analysis and surveys on various urgent issues in the sphere of human rights. The Committee includes leading experts on human rights from all continents. The first session of the Board will be held in Geneva on August 4-15 of this year.

The success is also significant because a representative of Azerbaijan was elected a member of this supreme expert body on human rights for the first time.
