11 April 2008 [15:44] - TODAY.AZ
Jamil Hasanli, Milli Medjlis deputy and public lawyer of Azadlyg newspaper correspondent Agil Halil, receive anonymous calls and messages of threats, Day.Az reports with reference to Azadlyg radio.
According to the parliamentarian, he started to receive such calls beginning from yesterday.

"Though they have not written their names, the cell phone memory contains their number. The first call came at 10:58 p.m. The next two messages contained curses and threats. I am waiting for the end. When I undertook the responsibilities of a public defender, I realized that the case would be serious.

Political reviewer of Zerkalo newspaper Rauf Mirkadirov and head of Turan news agency Mehman Aliyev also received anonymous calls and similar messages.

They called on Azerbaijan's Ministry of National Security to undertake this case as the anonymous calls have become mass.

Hasanli voiced regret that the law enforcement bodies started to carry out campaign against journalist Agil Halil instead of starting investigation.

Head of the Turan news agency Mehman Aliyev noted that the events which occured with Agil Halil is a result of fight between the reporter and authorities.

Spokesman for Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General's office Vugar Aliyev noted that if persons, who received anonymous calls and messages, appeal to the prosecutor's office, this issue will be investigated.

It should be noted that the Committee for protection of Agil Halil's rights was founded on April 9. It is chaired by MP Jamil Hasanli.
