A delegation of the American-Azerbaijani Council, represented by officers of the organization Javid Huseynov, Ismail Rustamov, Ulduz Berenjfurush, Arzu Aghayeva, Samir Lutveliyev, Rovshan Shafiyev and Zaur Hasanov, visited the California Senate in the capital of the state-Sacramento on May 12.
The said mission of the Azerbaijani diaspora was initiated by a group of Californian law-makers, who visited Azerbaijan under support of the Azerbaijani consulate general in Los Angeles in 2007.
The representatives of the council had separate meetings with senators Lori Saldania, Sheila Kewl, Alan Lovental, Eleine Alkwist, Julia Brownli and Betty Carnett, representing various districts of North and South California, where Azerbaijanis reside.
The community representatives also met with Esilde Samoville, chief of department of International Relations of the Senate and Agnez Li, chief of the Research Department of the Senate.
During the meeting, the delegation of the Azerbaijani community was informed about the work of the Californian law-makers, process of preparation, discussion and adoption of laws in the legislative body of California-the most densely populated state of the United States and the sixth larger economy in the world. In turn, the officers of the Council familiarized the law-makers with the work of the organization for consolidation of the Azerbaijani diaspora in California.
Ulduz Berenjfurush, officer of the American-Azerbaijani council on issues of youth and student of the prestigious Californian Univesity Berkeley, presented editions of the Birlik magazine to senators. This is a new edition, initiated by the Turkic Student Association of Berkeley under Ulduz's leadership support by the American-Azerbaijani Council, informing the readers about the culture and history of Turkic people, including Azerbaijanis.
During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation was also invited for a one-day session of the Californian Senate, where the flag of Azerbaijan was raised following an official speech, read by Sheila Kewl and senators welcomes the representatives of the Azerbaijani community.
The American-Azerbaijan Council expresses its special gratitude to deputy chief of department of international ties of the Californian Senate Schen Schellenberg, as well as consulate general of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles, led by Elin Suleymanov, in particular, vice-consul general Elman Abdullayev for efforts made for organization and coordination of the said visit of the Azerbaijani community.
